UNITERM II project

The process of harmonising the European university systems and the ensuing reforms of the Italian and Austrian university systems lead to a second edition of the terminological dictionary on university law in Italy and Austria (Dizionario terminologico dell’istruzione superiore Austria-Italia / Terminologisches Wörterbuch zum Hochschulwesen Italien-Österreich).

Given the strong relations existing between Austria and Italy in this field, the Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism was asked to elaborate a dictionary by the Department for the Right to Education, University and Scientific Research of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen-South Tyrol. The dictionary aims at fostering communication and collaboration between actors belonging to the two neighbouring countries.

The dictionary contains more than 1000 terminology entries and about 3000 concepts in Italian and German.

  1. As a first step, a systematic collection of specific reference material was needed. Laws, regulations, university statutes and specific handbooks were retrieved, as well as important internet sites (of the Italian and Austrian ministries and of all universities).
  2. This collection of texts allowed identifying the most important concepts of the subject field under analysis. During term selection synonyms and graphic variants were also considered.
  3. Each concept was then described through bibliographic references and definitions, where available.
  4. The two legal systems were compared in order to find equivalences and differences between them. Subsequently, also the German-language terminology used in South Tyrol was elaborated with the contrastive method.
  5. In the case of system-specific concepts with no equivalent in the other legal system, translation proposals were suggested and commented.
  6. Wherever necessary, linguistic, legal and terminological notes complete the information presented in the dictionary.
